The state of the economy and its impact on municipal finances is the primary focus for the candidates seeking the Kent mayor's office and a seat on Kent City Council. In the race for mayor, current At-large Councilman Rick Hawksley, a Democrat, is running against former mayor and council member Jerry Fiala, who held office as a Democrat but is running this fall as an independent. Five people are campaigning for council's three at-large seats. Incumbent Democrats Michael DeLeone and Robin Turner face competition from Democrat Vic Hart and independents Erik Valenta and Drew Smith.

AURORA - Three candidates are running for Councilman Joe Kastelic's at-large seat on Aurora Council " Kastelic, Richard Duncan and Brady Krebs. Meanwhile, political newcomer Fred Rote is challenging Ward 1 Councilman Jim Vaca in the only other contested council race.

Eight people are running for two seats in the hotly contested race for Waterloo Board of Education. They are Tara Bolanz, Jason Dean Braddock; Cynthia Franks; Steve Jones; Matthew L. Montgomery; Brian Pusateri; Brian Trautman; and Dianne M. Whittlesey.

COLUMBUS - Sen. Tim Grendell is a fiscal conservative who regularly rails against out-of-control government spending and tax hikes. But the Chesterland Republican plans to vote "Yes" on Issue 1, which would provide cash payments to Ohioans who have served in recent military conflicts in the Middle East. The issue would allow the state to borrow money to pay those bonuses.
